Africa Focus Internships, Young Professionals in Foreign Policy – Washington, DC

YPFP is seeking graduate students and/or young professionals for 3 paid internship opportunities
in the DC area with a focus on Africa. All interested candidates should submit the following documents as a single PDF file to

– 1 short (no more than 2 pages) writing sample demonstrating strong research and concise
writing on issues related to international relations or political economy (policy memo or
blog post format preferred)

Internship Opportunities

1) Intern for innovative start-up at the intersection of investment, policy, and emerging market
work in Africa
– Start date: ASAP
– Stipend: $1,000/mo. for 25 hrs/week
– NOTE: This internship has the potential to become full-time

Requirements:
– Understanding of international economics, business, and investment, especially in terms of
technology and entrepreneurship
– Strong interest in emerging markets, specifically those in Africa.
– Strong research and writing skills
– Exceptionally detail-oriented, organized, proactive and self-directed
– Flexible attitude that meshes well with start-up culture
– Proficient with PowerPoint and Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Hangouts, Drive, Docs,
Sheets, Slides)

Responsibilities:
– Quick turnaround research and regular writing, including creation of company materials
– Administrative support around events, scheduling, and database/knowledge base
management
– Coordination with conference organizers

2) Operations & Events intern for non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening
commercial ties between the United States and Nigeria
– Start date: ASAP
– Stipend: based on experience and availability
– Time commitment: 25-30 hours per week

Requirements:
– Exceptional writing and research abilities
– Organizational skills (e.g. maintaining databases, tracking outreach, ensuring follow-up)
– Experience with project management, event planning & coordination
– Self-motivated and driven with a strong work ethic. Hustler attitude a plus.
– Desire to be part of an entrepreneurial minded, fast-paced, and versatile environment
– Reliable with a track record of project deliverables
– Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred)

Responsibilities:
– Assist in event planning and event coordination for exclusive C-Suite- level dinners as well
as events in multiple cities in the United States
– Assist in coordinating executive level delegations’ visits in DC, NYC, Lagos, and Abuja
– Draft communications to C-Suite- level executives and high-level government officials
– Assist in managing website, communications, and membership database
– Detailed note-taking at meetings
– Assisting in setting meetings, preparing agendas, maintain communications with members
and staff and developing materials/preparing reports
– Administrative support as necessary for operations
– Research, propose, and execute for increasing operational efficiencies
– Detailed tracking of expenditures and budgets

3) Summer intern for international strategic advising firm focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa
– Internship dates: Full time from late May/early June through mid-August
– Stipend: based on experience and availability
– Time commitment: 30-40 hours per week

Requirements:
– Accomplished researcher & excellent writer with exceptional organizational skills
– Strong understanding of international politics, economics, business, and culture, especially
in regard to technology and entrepreneurship
– Robust background, demonstrated interest, and experience living in Sub-Saharan Africa
– Regional language strongly preferred, particularly French, but not required
– Proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel, Prosperworks, Adobe, and Office 365 a plus

Responsibilities:
– Extensive research of public policy and business issues
– Attending and reporting on speeches and events of interest to the firm and clients
– Assisting professional staff with general office and administrative support
– Translation work
