Alcoa Intern – Global Government Affairs & Sustainability

Position Description

This position provides in-depth exposure to international business issues with a focus on trade, political risk, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and energy-related issues. The position will focus on the company
portfolio relating to the United States and China but will also span Alcoa’s geographical footprint. The intern will be fully integrated into the Government Affairs & Sustainability team under the mentorship of senior Alcoa professionals. In this role, the intern will be expected to take on substantive work in research, project management, and stakeholder outreach. The intern will also be expected to manage independent projects during the course of employment. This position requires a high degree of discretion and sensitivity as well as strongresearch, analytical, written, and presentation skills.

Major Activities

The responsibilities of this role will include, but are not limited to:
•Developing substantive content for briefing papers, white papers, and executive-level presentations for internal and external audiences.
•Supporting international government, IGO and NGO stakeholder relationship management.
•Monitoring policy and legislative issues, providing regular verbal and written updates to senior leadership.
•Representing Alcoa at and providing readouts of meetings with partner organizations and external stakeholders in Washington.
•Supporting operation of the Alcoa Corporation Employees’ Voluntary Political Action Committee.
•Project management, including preparing and maintaining project plans.
•Assist in office projects including IT, knowledge management and other areas as determined.
•Other duties as assigned.

The job environment requires a high level of judgment, teamwork, and adaptability. The candidate should expect to make independent decisions regarding planning, organizing, and scheduling of own work. The candidate may interact with all levels of executives within Alcoa and with high level foreign and U.S. government officials and business executives.

Critical Competencies
Global Business and Political Acumen – The ideal candidate will possess experience and interest in the commercial, economic, and political issues driving the domestic and global mining and manufacturing sector. Familiarity with trade policy will position the intern for success. In addition, a demonstrated ability to
understand the business and financial implications of domestic and international policy and political developments is important. Fluency in foreign language(s) is a plus, especially Mandarin and/or Alcoa footprint languages.

Research/Writing
– The ideal candidate will possess excellent qualitative/quantitative research and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to quickly and concisely summarize relevant conclusions. The intern will be regularly required to provide well-researched and concise writing under tight timelines.

Tenacity and Organization – Workload can be high volume and fast paced. A successful candidate thrives in ever-changing, and sometimes stressful, environments, and is able to solve problems quickly and move on to the next issue. S/he is a highly self-motivated and autonomous worker.

Attention to Detail and Deadlines – Accurate documentation of details and attention to deadlines is required for this position.

Interest in Alcoa’s Portfolio – Alcoa maintains a fascinating and varied mining and manufacturing portfolio. The ideal intern will demonstrate a genuine interest in and ability to learn about this portfolio and be able to apply concepts and frame deliverables in a manner that is meaningful to Alcoa’s business goals.

Hours/Length/Start Date

Full-time preferred (40 hours/week); three months (may be extended); early April start date (negotiable)

Qualifications
•Master’s degree or current enrollment in a master’s program
•At least 1 year of policy research/analytical experience, preferably on Capitol Hill, with the U.S.
Government, in a trade association, or working in a corporate government affairs office. *Previous internships account toward this*
•Strong knowledge/competency of PowerPoint and Word, Excel and general IT concepts.
