America’s diplomats are selected every year from the approximately 15,000 people who take The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT). The FSOT is offered three times a year, and is open to American citizens between the ages of 20 and 59 from any educational or professional background. It is free. The FSOT is held in October, February, and June. You can register at careers.state.gov.

But becoming a diplomat is not the only way to work for the State Department! You might consider using your language skills with the Consular Fellows Program (now hiring speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Russian, and Arabic). If you have at least a year of law enforcement experience, you may also be interested in the Diplomatic Security Agency. Mid-career professionals can work as civil servants or Foreign Service Specialists in the fields of medicine, accounting, office management, human resources, and others.

Join career diplomat Usha Pitts for an informal presentation about the different ways to work and live abroad with the U.S. Department of State. Usha graduated from the Elliott School in 1996 and became a Foreign Service Officer in 1998, serving tours in Cuba, Russia, Panama, Austria, Italy, and Brazil. She raised her two teen-aged children abroad, and is newly married to a British national.

This event is hosted by the Elliott School, but open to the public. GT alumni and students in DC this summer are invited to attend. Business Casual dress is recommended.
