This external sponsorship/academic credit-focused spring internship, beginning in January 2019, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in with an interest in the Middle East to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment. Founded in 2002, the Center for Middle East Policy (CMEP) brings together the most experienced policy minds working on the region, and provides policymakers and the public with objective, in-depth and timely research and analysis. Our mission is to chart the path – political, economic, and social – to a Middle East at peace with itself and the world. The Center, part of the Foreign Policy Program at Brookings, is also home to the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World, which seeks to foster frank dialogue and build positive partnerships between the United States and Muslim communities around the world.
This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.

The intern will acquire substantive professional and experience while working with the CMEP scholars and staff. Interns will assist with research tasks as assigned by scholars and staff. This will include monitoring and researching current events in the Middle East, proofreading, fact-checking, and editing research materials, and drafting relevant literature reviews from a variety of sources. Interns will also be asked to help with various administrative tasks including planning and staffing CMEP roundtables and workshops, update media, mailing, and invitation lists, and other tasks as assigned.
Interns will gain first hand experience in policy and international affairs throughout this internship and have a chance to hone their organization, analytical, and professional internpersonal skills by working with the scholars and staff in the Center for Middle East Policy. Interns will attend all CMEP internal meetings and roundtables, and all professional development programming planned by both the Foreign Policy Program and the Institution. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend relevant local think tank events and write summaries of the event for CMEP staff. Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.

Education/Knowledge/Skills:
Undergraduate students entering their junior or senior years and graduate students working toward a degree in a relevant field (i.e international affairs, foreign policy, political science, international law, international political economy, or related fields) may apply. Recent college graduates who meet the requirements are also welcome to apply.
Interns are expected to pay close attention to detail and have excellent research, writing, editing, and communication skills. A keen ability to understand foreign policy issues is important, along with good interpersonal skills, flexibility, discretion, and ability to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in a fast-paced atmosphere. English fluency is required and knowledge of a regional language (Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi) is desired.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
