Course Scheduling – MATH and ENG classes

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has instituted a credit threshold for English and Math courses, to ensure that that students do not put off these basic skills courses until too late in their study plans.  The general idea of general education is to have students master the basic skills they need in their first year or  two years in preparation for their major requirements which will, most likely, require these skills for success.

Freshmen admitted Summer 2010 or Fall 2010 are required to take ENGL 1101, ENGL 1102, and their first required math classes (e.g., MATH 1501, 1712) within their first 60 credit hours at Georgia Tech.

Freshman admitted Summer 2011 or Fall 2011 are required to take ENGL 101, ENGL 1102 and their first required math classes (e.g., MATH 1501, 1712) within their first 45 credit hours at Georgia Tech.

Freshman admitted Summer 2012 or Fall 2012 are required to take ENGL 101, ENGL 1102 and their first required math classes (e.g., MATH 1501, 1712) within their first 30 credit hours at Georgia Tech.

If a student has hit the threshold hour mark and has any of these classes outstanding, they must be taken in the next enrolled semester.  The Office of the Registrar is also working on a communication plan for disseminating this information to students who are in violation of the rule.  Registration holds will be used to enforce the regulation.
