What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Intern – Cyber & Risk Analysis R&D Undergrad Summer. Position #671026

As a Cyber & Risk Analysis Intern working in Sandia’s Systems Research & Analysis Department, you have a strong interest in cybersecurity, risk, and critical infrastructure security problems. You will work with a team of researchers that takes a broad systems perspective to informing strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions. As part of our multidisciplinary team of systems analysts, you will help conduct studies to provide decision insight to customers in ill-defined or complex multi-domain problem areas. You will apply critical thinking using a diversity of technical skills and expertise, and help to effectively communicate options, insights, and trade-offs to customers in a concise way that enables action.This may involve analyzing data sets, historical cyber-attack case studies, and informing risk analytic methodology development. Familiarity with cyber security concepts or risk analysis approaches is useful but not required.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Contribute to projects and analysis teams
  • Summarize and analyze open source reporting on cyber security incidents
  • Develop models to better understand consequences from attacks
  • Develop visualizations of data and concepts to communicate results
  • Work with customers to understand needs and propose solutions
  • Present results as appropriate at open conferences or internal meetings

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire

  • Interest in cybersecurity vulnerabilities, cyber risk, and associated policies (Federal, State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial levels)
  • Experience in conducting literature reviews and/or technical document reviews
  • Willingness to participate in debate and discussion about key project questions or issues
  • Interest in the following
    • clearly communicating complex cyber and risk assessment topics to people with limited cyber expertise
    • conducting analyses and reporting insights, recommendations, and other findings
    • visualization of data and analysis
    • Interest and/or experience reviewing mission functions for Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKR) sectors and their associated documentation
  • Interest and/or experience performing open source research into CIKR sector critical functions
  • Interest and/or experience researching CIKR failure consequences
  • Interest in database/catalog development
  • Experience in risk assessment, risk methods, and decision analysis
  • Evidence of professional service and leadership to the community, such as service on program committees, workshop organization, and/or editorial or review work.
  • A proven ability to frame and tackle complex and/or ill-defined multidisciplinary problems
