Internship in the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, International Labour Organization – Geneva, Switzerland

Department

The Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, based at ILO Headquarters in Geneva, maintains overall responsibility for the ILO’s presence and activities in the region, comprising of 51 countries.

It takes the lead in defining programme priorities and activities, monitoring programme delivery, and providing support and coordination to its field structure, which comprises of two Sub-regional Offices in Budapest and Moscow, and seven offices located in Ankara, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris and Rome.

The Regional Office serves as a link between the technical departments of the ILO and the field structure in Europe and Central Asia and represents the region vis-à-vis the ILO constituency, as well as other UN and international organisations.

Learning area

As an intern in the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, you will be gaining experience through working with the Regional Director and the staff of the Regional Office and assisting them in programming, coordination and technical advisory work in the region.

In 2019, an important part of the work of the Regional Office will be devoted to the ILO Centenary Initiatives and the high number of ILO Centenary-related events planned in the region. These events will require substantial support in terms of developing background material, briefings, statements and speeches, but also in the coordination of logistics.

In particular, you will be exposed to work related to collecting and analysing information on the countries of the region, including statistical data and information on economic and social policies at regional, sub-regional and national level.

You will help prepare speeches and briefing notes on member countries of the region, in view of the Centenary-related events, as well as for other regular meetings, e.g. the November session of the Governing Body, and meetings with labour ministers or other high-level officials from countries of the region.

You will take part in, and prepare notes from, meetings organised by the Regional Office, and will also assist in cooperation with UN agencies and other international and regional organizations in Europe and Central Asia.

Required qualifications

Education

Advanced university degree, preferably in Ecomics/Political/Social Sciences.

Experience

Good knowledge or previous work experience on economic, labour market and social issues in Europe and Central Asia.

Good knowledge or prior work experience in at least one of the following areas: diplomacy, employment, social dialogue and social protection, preferably related to the European and Central Asian region.

Languages

Excellent working (both oral and written) knowledge of English; working knowledge of another ILO official language (French or Spanish) is desirable.

Russian and/or another European language would be an advantage.

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Excellent analytical and writing skills (in particular in English), experience in research and data analysis; knowledge of statistical software an advantage.
