Spring 2020 Brookings Internships (Washington, DC)

Interns spend approximately 10 weeks working alongside leading experts in government and academia from all over the world. Brookings also offers students the opportunity to intern in departments such as communications, human resources and central operations management. The mission of the Internship Program is to provide students with a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to their field of study or career interest. Students engage in career exploration and development as well as learn new skills.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events. In addition, interns may participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.

  • This external sponsorship/academic focused spring internship, beginning in January 2020, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and graduate students with an interest in East Asia to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment. The internship is offered on the basis of academic credit and/or external financial support.
  • Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule.

Research and Events Internship, Center for East Asia Policy 

About the position

Interns will have the opportunity to assist with research for Senior Fellows in the Center for East Asia Policy Studies (CEAP). Additionally, interns may assist with the coordination of seminars, meetings, and public events; proofreading and editing; providing administrative support for CEAP staff; and monitoring current developments in East Asia and Southeast Asia. Interns should leave the internship with a better understanding of how to conduct high quality research, interact with top scholars in the field, and identify key areas in need of public policy research.

Qualifications 

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international relations, Asian studies, political science, etc.).
Qualified applicants will have demonstrated knowledge and experience in East Asia, international relations, and U.S. foreign policy. Experience working in an office setting is desired, along with attention to detail, a sense of initiative, and a strong desire to learn and to contribute as a valued team member. Fluent or native-level English language ability. Additionally, Chinese language ability or other regional language ability is preferred.

Workforce of the Future Internship

About the position

The intern will work with the Future of the Workforce research team to conduct and package statistical analysis on city-level industrial growth, educational policy and reskilling, and the evolving nature of the workplace due to automation and new technology. The intern will also assist in research, writing, and editing blogs.

Qualifications

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and graduate students are eligbile to apply. There is no required academic field for this internship, but students pursuing a degree in economics, statistics, sociology, or political science would be preferred candidates.
The ideal candidate will have experience in statistical analysis or other quantitative research. Candidates should be comfortable working with and analyzing qualitative data and synthesizing large amounts of literature. Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills, as well as skills drafting detailed literature reviews, are required. Proficiency on MS Excel and knowledge of all MS Office is required.

Subnational Threats-Transnational Networks Internship

About the position

Interns will learn how to apply theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom to a professional public policy institution and environment. They will develop practical work experience by researching issues pertaining to specific projects and activities, conducting qualitative and quantitative data evaluation, summarizing and synthesizing documents, maintaining contact databases, monitoring current developments in relevant research areas, attending events, and briefing support staff and senior fellows.

Qualifications

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduates students working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international affairs, foreign policy, political science, international law, international political economy, or related fields).
Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following research areas: illicit economies, counternarcotics policies, insurgencies, militant/extremist groups, terrorism, and human rights. Knowledge of Latin America (especially Mexico, Colombia, the Andean region, and Brazil), the Middle East and South Asia (especially Afghanistan), the Horn of Africa and West Africa, and/or South East Asia a plus. English fluency required; proficiency in additional language(s), especially Spanish, desired.

Research and Events Internship, India Project

About the position

Research Intern, Center for East Asia Policy

About the position

Interns will work with Fellows and staff in the Center for East Asia Policy Studies (CEAP) including, but not limitied, to the following:

  • Assisting with a scholar’s book project on China’s grand strategy;
  • Analyzing Mandarin language materials from mainland China;
  • Analyzing China’s efforts to shape global information and telecommunications networks;
  • Conducting various in-depth research tasks, for example compiling fact sheets, memos/readouts, resource lists, contact profiles, finding on-the-ground contacts for scholar’s field work, monitor weekly news or issues; and
  • Monitoring weekly news or issue areas; attending various events around town at other think tanks and summarizing findings.

Additional tasks may also include but not limited to the following:

  • Events:
    • Providing logistical support to both public and private events.
  • Administrative:
    • Copy-editing various China Strategy Initiative publications;
    • Printing and assembling research packages/binders; and
    • Updating and maintain multiple ongoing databases.

Qualifications 

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international relations, Asian studies, political science, etc).
Qualified applicants will have demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing and tracking various databases; technical skills (data visualization, programming language) are highly desired but not necessary; ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlinesin managing and tracking various databases; excellent orientation to detail, organizational, and communication skills; professional level proficiency in Chinese, including in both traditional and simplified characters.

Research Internship, John L. Thornton China Center

About the position

Interns will assist in the center’s research projects; compile, edit, and proofread interviews, speeches, and published articles of the center’s scholars; collect and organize data and information in both Chinese and English as needed; and arrange all research-relevant documents, reports and publications. Interns should leave the internship with a better understanding of how to conduct high quality research, interact with top scholars in the field, and identify key areas in need of public policy research.
Interns will also gain first-hand experience in public policy and international affairs by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of conferences, roundtables, briefings, and other meetings, attending foreign policy events, and general administrative support. Additionally, may also assist the center’s scholars on research tasks on an as needed basis.

Qualifications 

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year, or graduate students working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international relations, China studies, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Additionally, qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: Chinese political, social and economic issues and U.S. foreign policy in the region.
Previous editing and proofreading experience is required and demonstrated strong research skills are preferred. Additionally, native fluency of English is required and Mandarin Chinese language skills are desirable.
