This external sponsorship/academic credit fall internship, beginning in September 2018, is an unpaid opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in subnational threats-transnational networks to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.
This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.
Learning Objectives
Students will learn how to apply theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom to a professional public policy institution and environment. They will develop practical work experience by researching issues pertaining to specific projects and activities, conducting qualitative and quantitative data evaluation, summarizing and synthesizing documents, maintaining contact databases, monitoring current developments in relevant research areas, attending events, and briefing support staff and senior fellows.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Education/Knowledge/Skills
Graduate or undergraduate student (who has completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international affairs, foreign policy, political science, international law, international political economy, or related fields).
Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following research areas: illicit economies, counternarcotics policies, insurgencies, militant/extremist groups, terrorism, global democracy, human rights, emerging powers, and multilateral affairs. Knowledge of Latin America (especially Mexico, Colombia, the Andean region, and Brazil), the Middle East and South Asia (especially Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India), the Horn of Africa and West Africa, and/or South East Asia a plus. English fluency required; proficiency in additional language(s), especially Spanish, desired.
Additional Information
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings. Candidate selected will also need to provide a letter from their faculty advisor or external sponsor confirming that they will be receiving academic credit and/or funding for an academic credit or external sponsorship internship.
