ABOUT THE POSITION
AEI’s Foreign and Defense Policy department is seeking an intern with a general knowledge of foreign policy in a communications context, as well as regional expertise in Latin America.
The intern will assist the department’s communications assistant and audience development assistant in tracking metrics on the department’s output, developing the audience for the department’s work and events, and drafting promotional materials and newsletters.
The intern will also conduct research in support of AEI’s Latin America Studies Program, including AEI Visiting Fellow Roger Noriega and AEI Research Fellow Ryan Berg. Research topics will include political, economic, and security issues in the region such as transnational organized crime, illicit finance, democratic backsliding, and electoral politics. The intern will conduct research in support of research papers and op-eds and assist in the organization of conferences and events. The intern will also provide research support for the senior vice president for foreign and defense policy studies on a variety of foreign policy issues, including the Middle East and national security.
AEI internships offer a unique opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience in research, writing, business, and communications at one of the nation’s leading think tanks. Competitive candidates for these internships will generally possess a 3.4 GPA from a top-ranking college or university.
AEI internships last a minimum of 10 weeks, and interns are required to work 20-40 hours per week. AEI internships are unpaid; however, interns receive complimentary breakfast and lunch each day and a monthly transportation stipend to assist with commuting costs.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, demonstrates strong analytical and writing skills, is able to work in a fast-paced environment, and has a passion for foreign affairs. Applicants should have a background and demonstrated interest in Latin America and US foreign policymaking. Experience with digital media and customer relationship management is a plus. Proficiency in Spanish is essential. Proficiency in Portuguese is a plus.
