March 22-26 | Middlebury Institute Preview Days

The Middlebury Institute specializes in cross-cultural studies to prepare international affairs students for work in multicultural and/or multilingual positions.  They provide a close-knit community of students and faculty to help guide students on the path to making a meaningful impact on the world around them. The institute is offering a variety of different virtual preview days to allow interested students to learn more about the opportunities available to them at Middlebury.

The preview days will run from March 22-26, 2021, and will function out of the pacific time zone. Pre-registration is required for these events.

Monday, March 22

Noon–1:00 p.m. Deep Learning: Understanding How to Be a Better Learner (Expert Discussion)
Professor Mahabat Baimyrzaeva will walk you through a “Deep Learning” exercise where you will see what effective learning looks like and what facilitates it, dispel some of the taken-for-granted assumptions about learning, and become more intentional about the learning process moving forward.

Tuesday, March 23

Noon–1:00 p.m. Partnering with Local Communities to Promote Equity and Social Justice (Expert Discussion)
Learn how our new initiative CoLab cultivates relationships between neighboring universities and communities to collaboratively address complex local problems through research, professional development, resource mobilization, and joint action. This session will be led by Netta AvineriKent Glenzer, and Carolyn Taylor Meyer.

Tuesday, March 23

7:00–8:00 p.m. How Localization Drives Global Growth (Expert Discussion)
Gain insights into how the language services industry powers the global expansion of companies and organizations. Max Troyer, Grover Hermann Endowed Program Chair for Translation and Localization Management, and Associate Professor of Professional Practice will explain how translators, interpreters, and localization professionals enable companies and organizations to succeed beyond their wildest expectations.

Wednesday, March 24

Noon–1:00 p.m. The Importance of Language Learning (Expert Discussion)
Join Professor Thor Sawin in an exploration of new ideas, initiatives, and challenges at the intersection of language learning, technology, entrepreneurship, and activism.

Thursday, March 25

Noon–1:00 p.m. Welcome and Fall Format (Option I)
Dean of the Institute Jeff Dayton-Johnson will provide an overview of how the Middlebury Institute will help you launch a meaningful and rewarding career. He will also discuss our approach to on-site and remote learning this fall. To accommodate different time zones we are hosting this important session twice.

1:15–2:15 p.m. Navigating the Admissions Process and Scholarships: students who have not submitted their application yet are encouraged to attend this session. Join Sadia Khan, director of admissions, and Isabelle Dubrana, associate director of admissions.

2:30–3:30 p.m. Education Loans for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: meet with Regina Garner, director of Student Financial Services, and Trish Aportela, associate director of Student Financial Services.

3:45–4:45 p.m. Beyond the Classroom: Professional Development and Personal Wellbeing. This session will be particularly informative for students who have submitted their applications and admitted students. Join Alisyn Gruener, assistant dean of student life and engagement, and Gael Meraud, assistant dean for career and academic advising.

5:00–6:00 p.m. Welcome and Fall Format (Option II)
