The Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship provides 100 awards world-wide to candidates seeking a graduate degree at the University of Oxford. Beyond funding the entirety of the candidate’s study, the Rhodes Scholarship program also includes a first and second-year retreat, workshops, conferences, and discussion events hosted at Rhodes House. It would also provide the candidate with a life-long professional network of alumni. The Rhodes Scholarship is looking for young people with strong intellect, leadership abilities, and character. The scholarship covers:

  • Oxford University fees
  • A stipend to cover living expenses
    • The stipend for the 2019-2020 academic year was £15,900 ($21,666) annually, made in payments of £1,325 ($1806) per month
    • This is not sufficient to cover the cost of partners or dependents
Eligibility Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Completed an undergraduate degree from a college or university
  • 3.70 GPA
  • Upon October 1st of the year in which you apply, you must be
    • At least 18 years old and have not reached your 24th birthday
    • For older students who completed their degree later than usual, you must be under 27 years of age
  • If you have applied to the Rhodes Scholarship before and were unsuccessful, you are only allowed to reapply once more

The Marshall Scholarship

The Marshall Scholarship Program finances young Americans who wish to pursue a graduate degree at any school in the United Kingdom. The program wants to enable intellectually distinguished Americans to gain a deeper contemporary understanding and appreciation for Britain and to encourage scholars to act as ambassadors from the United States to the UK and vice versa to strengthen their British American understanding. The Marshall Scholarship wants to make advancements in Britain’s centers for academic excellence while promoting the academic fulfillment of each scholar. The two awards available are as follows:

  • The Two Year Marshall Scholarship
    • Tenable for two academic years (22 months)
    • It May be extended through, but not more than, 3 years by the Commission on a limited basis
  • The One Year Marshall Scholarship
    • Tenable for one academic year (12 months)
    • Can not be extended for any reason
  • Both awards include:
    • University fees
    • Cost of living expenses
    • Annual book grant
    • Thesis grant
    • Research and daily travel grants
    • Fares to and from the United States
    • Where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.
Eligibility Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Completed an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university
  • 3.70 GPA
