Embassy of Australia Internships, Washington DC

The Embassy of Australia in Washington, D.C. is currently seeking candidates for three internship positions. Internships are unpaid.  Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Congressional Liaison Internship

“The Congressional Liaison Office is a small team responsible for the strategic management of the Embassy’s engagement with the US Congress and for monitoring, analysing and providing advice on US political developments of interest to Australia.  The Congressional Liaison Office recruits one intern in the fall, summer and spring. Fall and spring interns usually complete three days per week and summer interns are usually full-time, however this is negotiable.  The internship is unpaid.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.  Applicants must have completed at least two years of university studies and be currently enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate studies. Applications will also be accepted from recent graduates from either undergraduate or postgraduate studies.  Applicants must either be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) or hold a dependant  visa with current Employment Authorisation. Under United States immigration law, any other class of visa (including ‘E’, ‘F’, and ‘J’) is not compatible with working for a foreign mission.

It is recommended that candidates submit their internship applications as early as possible. Please be advised that your commencement date is contingent upon the successful completion of your background checks undertaken by the Embassy.

Summary of Duties

The intern will assist with research and projects related to US elections and political developments and congressional activities of relevance to Australia including, but not limited to, foreign and trade policy; assist with the Embassy’s outreach to Congress; and perform general administrative duties, including database use.

Desired Skills

The successful candidate will:

  • Have knowledge of and personal interest in US politics and elections and/or the US Congress
  • Have completed a minimum of two years of a recognised college degree
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have strong research and analytical skills
  • Have the ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Have experience using databases
  • Has the ability to show initiative

Industry, Science & Education Internship

The objective of the Industry, Science and Education Branch of the Embassy of Australia in Washington, DC is to increase Australia’s collaboration and engagement with the United States (US) and Canada and to promote Australia as a source of high quality science, innovation, education and research.

Applicants must either be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) or hold a dependant  visa with current Employment Authorisation. Under United States immigration law, any other class of visa (including ‘E’, ‘F’, and ‘J’) is not compatible with working for a foreign mission.

The Branch focuses on the following areas:

  • Government-to-government dialogue: Australia and North America share many similar policy challenges. The Branch facilitates policy dialogue between the Government of Australia and the Governments of the US and Canada as a means to share best practices and lessons learnt for future policy development and encourage future collaboration.
  • Science and technology, innovation and education policy research and analysis: The office monitors and analyses policy and regulatory developments in the US and Canada across education, science and technology, and industry (including the energy and resources sector), reporting its findings to the Australian Government and key stakeholders.
  • Promoting the quality of Australian education, science and research capabilities:  The office engages with education and research institutions to promote Australian capabilities, encourage collaboration and increase academic and research mobility between Australia and the US.

The Industry, Science and Education Branch is currently seeking a full-time intern (37.5 hours/week) to begin work in mid-to-late March 2017. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks and comes with a $1000 monthly stipend. Start and end dates are somewhat flexible. Outstanding part-time candidates will also be considered (for a pro-rated stipend).

Summary of Duties 

The intern will assist with:

  • researching, monitoring, and reporting on US and Canadian higher education, science and technology policy;
  • attending and reporting on higher education, science and technology events;
  • supporting high-profile visits and events hosted at the Embassy;
  • and administrative work (e.g. database management, scheduling support, etc.).

Desired Skills

The successful candidate will:

  • Have knowledge of and personal interest in science, research, innovation and/or education policy
  • Have completed at least two years of college/university
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Executive Office of the Ambassador Internship

The Executive Office of the Ambassador is a small team responsible for the strategic planning and engagement of the Australian Ambassador to the United States.  The Executive Office is seeking an intern to participate in policy research and other projects related to the Ambassador’s engagement. The intern will be expected to complete three days per week, however this is negotiable. The internship is unpaid.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.  Applicants must have completed at least three years of college-level study and be currently enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate studies. Applications will also be accepted from recent graduates from either undergraduate or postgraduate studies.  Applicants must either be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) or hold a dependant  visa with current Employment Authorisation. Under United States immigration law, any other class of visa (including ‘E’, ‘F’, and ‘J’) is not compatible with working for a foreign mission.
