Fall 2017 Intern, American Councils for International Education – Washington, DC

Summary:

The Strategic Development and Fundraising Department of American Councils is responsible for establishing and expanding the organization’s sources of private charitable support. The Department seeks to grow support for the organization from individuals, corporations, and foundations through annual giving, major giving, corporate giving, foundation giving, and legacy giving programs.

The Development Internship is an unpaid internship that presents undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to learn about fundraising and event planning within the international education sector. The departmental intern will have the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day details of nonprofit management, with an emphasis on fundraising and development work. We are happy to work with the university and the interns to satisfy necessary requirements for the interns to receive academic credit.

The Department will also offer professional development opportunities to interns, including any organization-wide training and fundraising-specific events and webinars as available.

Responsibilities:

With this internship, graduate and undergraduate students will gain the opportunity to learn about fundraising at an international organization by working under close supervision by staff on tasks related to departmental events and campaigns. Specific tasks and responsibilities will vary according to the intern’s interests and skills, but may include:

  • Creating and updating materials for alumni and donor communications and special events
  • Conducting online research on individual, corporate, association, and foundational donor prospects
  • Working with staff to develop written materials for the Dan E. Davidson Legacy Event
  • Supporting event-planning efforts for additional special events
  • Assisting in processing donations and updating donor files
  • Support planning efforts for end-of-year mailing and online giving campaigns.

Interns should also expect to assist staff with routine administrative work.

Anticipated Internship Dates:

Fall internship is anticipated to last from September 1-December 5. Start and end dates are flexible, with the possibility for extension through spring 2017. The position is approximately 10-20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Please address availability in your cover letter. Please address availability in your cover letter.

This position is unpaid, but American Councils will work with the intern to help him or her acquire funding through their university or other sources. American Councils cannot guarantee a job at the end of the internship.

Qualifications
  • Recent graduate or currently enrolled in a higher education institution, to which you will be returning or plan to return to after the completion of the internship;
  • Developed writing skills
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Experience with open source research a plus
  • Knowledge of InDesign a plus
