FALL 2021 Brookings Institute Internships

The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit based in Washington, DC that is dedicated to conducting in-depth research into public policy to foster innovation for societal problems on a local, national and global level.  The internship program at Brookings provides the opportunity for junior and senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent university graduates with the opportunity to gain meaningful pre-professional experience.

There are three types of internships: paid, for credit, and external sponsorship.  Internships typically last 10-12 weeks and will be based in Washington, DC. The research areas that interns typically focus on are Economic Studies, Foreign Policy, Global Economy and Development, Governance Studies, and Metropolitan Policy.

The deadline to apply for the fall 2021 session is June 20, 2021.

Decisions will be sent out during the week of July 30, 2021. The program runs from September 20, 2021, through December 10, 2021.

Research Intern, Foreign Policy, India Project

Throughout this remote ten-week program, the Foreign Policy research intern will work directly under the Director and Senior Fellow of the Brookings India Project. The main responsibility of the intern will be to assist with research, but interns may also assist with the coordination of events, editing of academic materials, administrative support, and monitoring current events and developments in India and South East Asia.

Qualifications

  • Must be one of the following: an Undergraduate Student in their Junior or Senior year OR a graduate student. The student, regardless of level, must be working towards a degree in a relevant subject area.
  • Must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following is preferred: India and/or South Asia; International Relations; U.S. Foreign Policy
  • Experience working in an office setting and/or remotely is desired

Research Internship, Foreign Policy, John L. Thorton China Center

This intern will have the opportunity to be a part of the Thorton Center’s research projects through compilation and editing of interviews, speeches, and published articles, as well as data analysis and organization. The intern will be required to work in the English and Mandarin languages interchangeably. This position will also have the opportunity to assist in the editing and translation of book manuscripts. This opportunity will be conducted remotely.

Qualifications

  • Must be one of the following: an Undergraduate Student in their Junior or Senior year OR a graduate student. The student, regardless of level, must be working towards a degree in a relevant subject area.
  • Must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: Chinses political, social, and economic issues, and U.S. foreign policy in the region.
  • Previous editing, proofreading, and research experience
  • Native fluency of English required and Strong Mandarin language skills desirable

Research Intern, Foreign Policy, Center on the United States and Europe

This internship focuses on a broad range of issues: transatlantic relations, the future of the European Union,  Brexit, Russia, U.S.-EU-China relations, the impact of COVID-19, and the state of democracy in Europe and the United States. This intern will assist with administrative and programmatic work, event coordination, and research. This program is operating remotely.

Qualifications

  • Must be one of the following: an Undergraduate Student in their Junior or Senior year OR a graduate student. The student, regardless of level, must be working towards a degree in a relevant subject area.
  • Must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Demonstrated interest in European Affairs

Research Intern, Foreign Policy, Center for Middle East Policy

This intern will have the opportunity to acquire professional experience by providing the Center for Middle East Policy with administrative and programmatic assistance, event coordination, and research support.  The intern will support research on projects that examine issues such as the new geopolitical order of the Middle East, the U.S. relationship with its autocratic allies, and the rise of populism and its impact on U.S. relations with the Middle East. By the end of the internship, students will hone organizational, analytical, and professional interpersonal skills while assisting CMEP in its mission to foster high-level U.S. – Middle Eastern dialogue on the changes in the Middle East and the global challenges that affect regional relations.

Qualifications

  • Must be one of the following: an Undergraduate Student in their Junior or Senior year OR a graduate student. The student, regardless of level, must be working towards a degree in a relevant subject area.
  • Must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Demonstrate knowledge and interest in the politics, cultures, and/or languages of the Middle East
  • Acute attention to detail and excellent research and writing skills
  • English fluency is required; proficiency in a regional language (Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew) is a plus
