NATO Internship Opportunities

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is seeking interns to work for a 6 month period.  Applicants should be currently enrolled in or have completed a degree program in International Relations, Political sciences, Political marketing, Public relations, European studies, Public policy, Journalism, Communications studies, History, Marketing, Brand/Advertising, Media, Marketing, Social Media, Broadcasting, Security and Defence studies or other related fields of study. There are many opportunities available beyond the four that are highlighted below. All positions have unique requirements.

Public Diplomacy Division – Engagement Section | Current Undergraduate Student

  • The goals of the Public Diplomacy Engagement Section are as follows:
    • Strengthen NATO’s public image
    • Foster awareness and understanding of NATO, its values, policies, and activities
    • Ultimately enhance trust in and support for the Alliance
  • An intern’s responsibilities include:
    • Assist the relevant program officers with the planning, implementation, and monitoring of engagement projects in NATO nations and /or partner countries and related event organizing activities
    • Participate and write the minutes of various task force meetings, where required
    • Contribute to the Section’s work towards the implementation of public diplomacy communications activities
    • Contribute to the development of Section’s products and content
    • Assist, where appropriate, in the preparations of briefing sessions and visits to NATO HQ and abroad
    • Further develop research on ongoing projects, i.e. public opinion updates
    • Any other activities were suitable and relevant

Operations Division – Defence Institution and Capacity Building Directorate | Completed Bachelor’s

  • The goals of the Directorate are as follows:
    • Prepare NATO for the defense of alliance territories
    • Respond to crises at home and abroad
    • Strengthen the capabilities of partners
  • Interns will work directly under the Director, Deputy Director, or Portfolio Managemen or within one of the Directorate’s eight teams:
    • Planning and Review Process (PARP)
    • Defence and Related Security Capacity Building Initiative (DCB)
    • Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine (CAP)
    • Building Integrity (BI), Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP)
    • Professional Development Programme (PDP)
    • Partnership Training and Education Centres (PTEC)
    • Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC)

Office of the Secretary-General – Human Security Unit | Completed Bachelor’s

  • The goals of the Women Peace and Security Unit work to increase inclusivity and gender equality for the benefit of all. They are guided by the principles of the United Nations Security Council on WPS.
  • Interns will work with a small team to help craft policy related to these issues as well as the implementation of such policy to make a global impact.

Political Affairs and Security Policy Division | Completed Bachelor’s

  • The Political Affairs and Security Policy Division leads on the political aspects of NATO’s fundamental security tasks, with responsibility for:
    • NATO’s Partnerships
    • Security Policy development
    • Relations with Multilateral Organizations
    • Conventional Arms Control Policy and the non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction
  • An interns responsibilities include:
    • Assist in the development and preparation of policy papers, checklists, and speeches for high-level NATO officials and speaking notes for meetings
    • Take notes at committee meetings
    • Support the organization of workshops, seminars, and events
    • Conduct basic research and assist in monitoring global developments
    • At times, attend debates and discussions on security and defense-related issues with relevance to the internship
    • Provide administrative, organizational, and coordination support
