Research Internship, Governance Studies Program – Brookings – Washington, DC

Position description

The Governance Studies Program is currently accepting applications for Fall 2014. Interns will be responsible for research assistance and providing some program and administrative support services as the need arises. Internships typically run from September to December, though exact start and end dates are flexible. Please note that all positions are unpaid.

Qualifications

Undergraduate students – especially juniors and seniors – and recent college graduates with backgrounds in public policy, political science and economics are encouraged to apply. Our most successful interns have:

– A demonstrated interest in American politics and policy; congress and congressional reform; and/or electoral politics.
-Strong writing, analytic and internet-based research skills.
-Experience with fact-checking and familiarity with tracking legislation, election issues and poll data.
-Familiarity with data collection; Stata/SPSS; database management; poll data; Excel; and/or economic statistics.

Interns will provide research support to Governance Studies scholars and research staff, and will also assist the administrative team in impact and outreach activities as the need arises. Research topics include, but are not limited to:

-The modern history of the Republican Party
-Religion & politics
-Federalism, fiscal reform and the infrastructure bank
-Collecting, fact-checking, and helping to maintain Vital Statistics on Congress; political polarization; reforming government; political and corporate governance issues; and anti-corruption laws and efficacy.
-The legalization of marijuana, compromise and candidate-selection, gay marriage and family, and health care innovation.
