SUMMER 2021 International Rescue Committee Internships

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) gives aid to those whose lives have been disrupted by conflict and disaster. They aim to help people survive, recover, and regain control of their futures. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 27,000 refugees from 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees. The IRC is seeking interns for the summer semester to aid with their rescue efforts. These internships are part-time and will run from May through July or August.

Food Security Intern

The Food Security Intern reports directly to the New Roots Program Coordinator and supports efforts under the IRC’s New Roots program. New Roots focuses on bringing refugees together to build connections with their new homes through nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and community gardening.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and promotion of a Food Secure Resettlement (FSR) strategy within the Atlanta IRC office by working with the Resettlement department and New Roots program, including research of funding opportunities;
  •   Develop an FSR database that can track food security indicators (such as client housing proximity to fresh produce outlets, diet-related illness, etc.);
  • Implement a strategy for assisting clients that have been identified as food insecure;
  • Support adult educational programs and workshops within New Roots, including lessons on nutrition, food access, and healthy eating.

Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in food security, either through research and/or local programs;
  • Strong interest in working with international clients and excellent spoken and written communication skills;
  •   Ability to work independently and take initiative;
  • Proven ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences;
  • A clean driving record and reliable vehicle;
  • Basic experience in gardening and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds strongly preferred.

Refuge Microenterprise Intern

The Refugee Microenterprise Development intern reports directly to the Microenterprise Development Coordinator and supports efforts under the IRC’s Microenterprise Development program. Microenterprise Development, a program within the Economic Empowerment Department, provides refugees currently in business or seeking to start businesses with opportunities for business training, one-on-one business technical assistance, and assistance with access to credit and capital.

Responsibilities

 Assist the Microenterprise Development Coordinator with program recruitment efforts by developing and distributing flyers and brochures, and engaging with community organizations and local businesses

  • Provide program orientations and trainings to individuals and groups
  • Work with refugee entrepreneurs to strengthen their business plans, develop marketing materials, and provide other supportive services as needed
  • Conduct business-related research in key industries
  • Maintain case files for all program clients
  • Enter data into the program’s information data systems and internal tracking systems
  • Provide general administrative support and maintain accurate records of Microenterprise Development program activities

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in working with international clients
  • Proven ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and internet research
  • Enthusiasm for helping people to learn and demonstrated professionalism
  • Interns must be able to work at least 15 hours a week for at least three months
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle
  • Graphic design and/or web development experience strongly preferred
