SUMMER 2021 IOM Migration Health Internship

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization that works with migration management.  They do so by providing services to aid in migration as well as advising governments on expected migrations.  IOM is seeking an intern this summer semester to work for their Migration Health Division for the Americas. The MHD in the Americas, represented by the Regional Migration Health Specialist provides technical guidance and policy advice, establishes partnerships with relevant governmental, regional, multilateral, civil society, and private entities in the domain of migration health, and identifies strategies and programmatic approaches that are informed by agreed policies, evidence, standards and trends in the sector.   The selected intern will under the Regional Director for North and Central America, and the Caribbean. This internship will last 6 months beginning on May 1, 2021, and will be functioning remotely out of the office in San Jose, Costa Rica. This internship is unpaid.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly collect evidence-based information from relevant sources on migration and health to contribute to strategic planning, project design and resource decisions;
  • Contribute to all stages of development of new concept notes/project proposals including research of needs, actor and donors mapping, identification of problems, proposal drafting, resource mobilization and partnership building;
  • Provide technical support as requested by IOM country missions in the Americas in the development and implementation of evidence-based public health initiatives in line with the Organization’s mandate, the needs of beneficiaries and member states, and available resources;
  • Provide technical support in the development of actions on health assistance to crisisaffected migrants, outbreak preparedness, including COVID-19, community-based surveillance and infection prevention control among other areas of interventions;
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of migration and health programmes and identify best practices in different missions, closely collaborating with and contributing to the Regional Knowledge Management Hub;
  • Support the Regional Migration Health Specialist for the Americas in day to day tasks and
    other priorities, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Graduate program; Preference is given to those with pre-medical experience
  • Familiarity with communicable, and non-communicable disease control, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and other public health-related subject matters;
  • Strong research skills, with a focus on medicine/public health required;
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise progress reports, proven skills in writing summary documents and editing reports, project documents and proposals, is desirable;
  • Ability to work effectively both on his/her own and within a team of varied cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Experience in MS Package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise progress reports, proven skills in writing summary documents and editing reports, project documents and proposals, is desirable;
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
