Stimson is one of the leading voices in global issues and has been working toward building global security and stability for the last three decades. Today, as changes in power and technology usher in a challenging new era, Stimson is at the forefront: Engaging new voices, generating innovative ideas and analysis, and building solutions to promote international security, prosperity, and justice. Stimson is looking for undergraduate or graduate students to work remotely as interns to aid in their various programs this summer.

Available Positions

Partnerships in Proliferation Prevention (PPP) Internship | Undergraduate & Graduate | Unpaid

The PPP program supports international efforts to slow the spread of nuclear, radiological, chemical, and biological weapons.  PPP is a part of Stimson’s Promoting Security & Prosperity program (PSP), and interns will often cross-work for both opportunities helping PSP with their efforts to decrease WMD use worldwide.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Research, writing, analysis, and editing
  • Coordination and organization of events
  • Representing Stimson at meetings and related events
  • Programmatic and Administrative support
Qualifications
  • Strong interest in multidisciplinary and innovative solutions to WMD proliferation challenges
  • Basic understanding of WMD nonproliferation issues
  • Strong research, analysis, writing, and editing skills, including experience in archival research
  • Familiarity with WordPress
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work
  • Flexibility to work effectively both independently, without supervision, and as part of a team
  • Full-time availability (Minimum of 20 hours per week with preference given to those who can work 30+)

Nuclear Security Internship | Undergraduate & Graduate | Unpaid

The Stimson Center’s Nuclear Security Program seeks an intern for the Summer of 2021 to join a team dedicated to reducing nuclear terrorism threats. This internship provides an opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student to meet experts in nuclear policy, attend lectures and seminars, and engage in independent research.

Responsibilities

 

  • Research, write and edit program publications
  • Coordinate program events
  • Represent Stimson at meetings and related events
  • Attend virtual events and briefings related to nuclear security
  • Provide programmatic and administrative support
Qualifications
  • Interest in nuclear security policy, including nuclear terrorism, insider threats, nuclear materials and weapon security, emerging technologies, and intersectionality in the nuclear field
  • Strong research and analysis skills, including writing and editing
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively independently, without supervision, and as part of a team
  • Full-time availability required (40 hours a week)

Nuclear Safeguards Internship | Graduate | Unpaid

The Nuclear Safeguards Program (NSP) offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear materials security, and control. The NSP examines the resiliency of the verification system that underpins the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Efforts are currently aimed at understanding how future nuclear facilities, such as emerging reactors e.g. SMRs and advanced reactors, deep geological repositories, and multinational fuel cycle facilities, coupled with emerging technologies, challenge and/or enhance the management of safeguards.

Defense Strategy and Planning Internship | Undergraduate & Graduate | Unpaid

The Stimson Center’s Defense Strategy and Planning Program seeks a highly motivated upper-level undergraduate or graduate student to assist with the research for a project on the use of force in Chinese foreign policy. The intern will contribute primarily to the analysis of open-source data on the use or deployment of military force to achieve discrete political and strategic objectives. The intern will also assist with substantial research, literature reviews, writing, and editing for a forthcoming book project. The intern will also have the opportunity to pursue a research agenda, culminating in a presentation and, depending on the individual’s analytic aptitude and motivation, the publication of an op-ed. The internship is well suited for candidates interested in gaining practical experience and knowledge on Indo-Pacific security affairs and the use of coercion in Chinese foreign policy.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct case research and data entry in support of project objectives
  • Summarize findings from relevant literature in both English and Chinese
  • Assist project staff with proofreading, editing, research, and related tasks
  • Assist project staff with media outreach, including mailings and information requests
Qualifications
  • Strong interest in Chinese foreign policy and strategic issues, particularly deterrence and coercive diplomacy
  • Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative social science research methods
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills
  • The ability to work efficiently and independently while showing initiative

Blockchain in Practice Internship | Undergraduate | Paid

The Blockchain in Practice BiP Program offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of non-proliferation, international security, and blockchain technology. Efforts are currently focused on studying the impact of distributed ledger technology DLT on organizations and people within four main streams: nuclear safeguards, nuclear security, export controls, and the peaceful trade of dual-use chemicals. The virtual internship will focus on DLT efforts that are cross-cutting with other programs at Stimson.

Digital Communications Internship | Undergraduate | Unpaid

Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan public policy research institute committed to finding and promoting practical and innovative solutions to national and international security challenges, seeks an energetic and creative individual to assist with the daily operations in Stimson’s Communications Department. Interns will gain experience with nonprofit communications, as well as an opportunity to interact with all of Stimson’s programs, attend internal meetings, go to local think tank events and participate in professional development workshops.

Responsibilities
  • Draft and publish copy for Stimson’s social media channels, maintaining brand consistency and tone across platforms
  • Research current events in foreign policy and international relations to connect Stimson’s work to timely and/or trending topics on social media.
  • Assist in writing website content, press releases, and mass emails
  • Work with the graphic design intern to create infographics for various platforms
  • Monitor news coverage and maintaining a media database
  • Create and maintain media lists
  • Identify opportunities for Stimson experts to respond to issues in the news
  • Develop outreach and dissemination strategies for product releases
  • Assist with video shooting and editing tasks as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Students majoring in communications, journalism, public relations with a background in international relations preferred. Recent graduates also accepted.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including experience with proofreading and condensing complex information into quick summaries.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, as well as a basic understanding of how the news media operate.
  • Familiarity with AP Style
  • Some experience working with design platforms such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Spark, Canva, etc.
  • Strong interest in foreign policy issues and international relations
  • Highly motivated and sincere in your desire for an internship that is challenging and professional in nature.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Full-time or part-time available hours can be flexible for the right candidate
