Georgia STAND-UPThe Strategic Alliance for New Directions and Unified Policies (STAND-UP) is an alliance of leaders representing community, faith, academic, labor, and business organizations. Based in metro Atlanta, it is active throughout the southeast. STAND-UP organizes and educates communities to impact public policy, especially related to sustainable growth, economic inclusion, transit-oriented development, and community benefits.

STAND-UP’s mission is to provide information and resources that help create healthy, livable neighborhoods while respecting the right of existing community residents to benefit from new investment, emerging technologies, and workforce opportunities created by innovation and growth. Its goal is to alleviate poverty and encourage regional equity through the empowerment of ordinary citizens, and to ensure that historically neglected communities benefit from economic progress.

THINK : Research and Policy Analysis Internship

As a “think tank” for working communities, STAND-UP conducts research around policy, social and economic issues. We also seek to provide technical support for communities and organization as well as best practice recommendations for policy makers.

Research and Policy Analysis Interns might be responsible for the following:

  • Monitoring city and regional policies related to economic development
  • Conduct best practice research on related policy issues throughout the country
  • Assist with community-based research on specific neighborhoods and communities in the Atlanta region
  • Track policy statements and related legislation, and relevant policy publications
  • Attend and report on public meetings at City Hall and other venues
  • Review relevant government agency websites and publications daily
  • Review relevant newspapers and other news sources daily
  • Research positions and actions taken by public officials
  • Undertake other research as needed
  • Provide general administrative support as needed

Eligible candidates should have:

  • Excellent writing and comprehension skills
  • A passion for community and policy
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • A willingness to perform administrative tasks
  • Familiarity with the full Microsoft Office suite (Excel and Word in particular)

SPEAK : Communications and Social Media Internship

STAND-UP is seeking Communications Interns with a strong desire to learn, grow, and contribute to positive social change. The Communications Interns will assist the Communications Coordinator with internal communications with our member base as well as external communications with media sources and other organizations. In addition interns will help with research and organizing efforts when needed.

Some tasks include:

  • Updating STAND-UP calendar to include public meetings and community events
  • Sending out our weekly newsletter with important events
  • Creating flyers for meetings, events, rallies, etc.
  • Post news and updates on Twitter and Facebook
  • Prepare materials for distribution to the public and press, including press releases, policy briefs, newsletters, and reports
  • Organize and provide logistical support for events such as press conferences, public hearings, and speaking engagements.

Ideal candidates should have:

  • Experience with Social Media such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Knowledge of Adobe publishing programs
  • Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills
  • An interest in advocacy and politics
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • A willingness to perform administrative tasks.

ACT : Community Organizing and Advocacy Internship

STAND-UP is seeking Community Organizing interns with a strong desire to learn, grow, and contribute to social change, personal growth, and community projects. The Community Organizing interns will contribute to major projects, working closely with and under the guidance of experienced
organizers.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting various organizing efforts by canvassing in the targeted communities
  • Assisting with community meetings and events organized by STAND-UP and other ally groups
  • Data entry to track organizing and outreach effort
  • Developing and/or editing outreach materials as necessary
  • Voter Registration and Education Campaigns

Candidates should be:

  • Well organized, outgoing and highly professional in his or her conduct and appearance
  • We are looking for strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A passion for community and grass roots social change issues
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • A willingness to perform administrative tasks
  • Familiarity with the full Microsoft Office suite (Excel and Word in particular)
