Peacebuilding in Colombia Scholarship 2018

Red Tree Study is offering scholarship funding of $3,900 USD for participation in the Peacebuilding in Colombia
Academic Summer Course run by Universidad de Los Andes from Monday 11 June – Friday 29 June 2018.
‘Armed Conflict, Peace Processes and the Challenges of Peacebuilding in Colombia’, is a three week course, run by
Angelika Rettberg, Director of the Masters in Peacebuilding at Los Andes and delivered by the Political Science
department there. It will explore the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the challenges of implementing the
current peace process.

Now entering its third year, the course combines lectures and seminars taught by academics from Los Andes with
educational site visits that deliver practical knowledge of the political and social situation in Colombia. In 2017, students
met with President Santos’ Communications team to discuss the influence of public opinion on the peace negotiations
and visited the UN Development Project, the Center for Transitional Justice, the Colombian Congress and the
Reparation of Victims Unit, and took part in a guided tour of the city’s political graffiti for example. One highlight was a
group trip to the demobilization zone in Icononzo where students spent the day with former FARC combatants and the
UN representatives managing the camp. The 2018 course will include many of the same excursions, although the
exact content may be altered to reflect the outcome of the upcoming presidential election and any further
developments in implementing the peace accords.

The program includes supervised accommodation in Los Andes student residence, an airport pickup on arrival, and a
calendar of social and cultural activities for evenings and weekends, designed to help students explore Colombia as
much as possible whilst they are there.

The scholarship winner will be joining students from prestigious universities throughout the USA and the UK. We have hosted candidates from Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Bristol, Durham University, the University of Sussex, Cardiff University, Aberystwyth University, Oxford Brookes, the University of Southern California, Vassar College, San Francisco State University, The University of Maryland, Ohio State, Emory University, Queen’s Ontario and the University of British Columbia, and many more. You can read reviews from many of these students online here and here. For more information, please download the program flyer here, or go to www.redtreestudy.com/uniandes.
