Proposed* GATech Southeast Asia Summer Program

This study abroad program will explore nontraditional security challenges (piracy, terrorism, illegal trafficking, infectious disease, etc.) across four Southeast Asian states: Singapore, Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), and Cambodia. The four states reflect different development levels, from the technologically-driven city-state of Singapore to developing states in transition from military and autocratic rule to democracy.

Aside from investigating the role of institutions and the relationship between sovereignty-related norms and human rights, another major focus will be the role science and technology (such as nanotechnology; biotechnology; information & communications technology; energy technologies including renewables) play in ameliorating or exacerbating traditional and non-traditional security challenges in Southeast Asia. We will examine the interaction of international, regional, and local public and private actors in the four countries, and hear from government officials, representatives of NGOs, businesses, academia, etc.

Program Highlights

Experience Angkor Wat; visit the tragic Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge;
Home-stay with a Cambodian family;
Trek in Hill-tribes region of Northern Thailand;
Visit Kanchanaburi (Bridge over the River Kwai) and Bangkok
Visit Myanmar’s capital Yangon & the ancient city of Bagan
Spend three weeks in the global city-state of Singapore
Site visits to think tanks, multinational firms, NGOs

Georgia Tech 1^st Generation Students can receive up to $4000 for the Southeast Asia Study Abroad Program through the Coca-Cola Foundation Mobility Scholarships.
