Public Health Apprentice Program (PHAP)

Apprenticeships in Public Health — 2009
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking individuals for participation in the Public Health Apprentice Program (PHAP), a three-year program providing frontline work experience and training in public health. Apprentices are involved in a wide variety of public health activities relating to disease control and prevention and health promotion. Apprenticeships involve a series of progressive assignments in local health departments beginning on or about July 20, 2009. Successful completion of the program will prepare Apprentices for future career opportunities in public health at national, state and local levels. McKing Consulting Corporation has been contracted by CDC to coordinate PHAP recruitment activities.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year institution prior to July 1, 2009. Individuals with an academic emphasis in the physical and social sciences as well as the humanities are encouraged to apply.
Locations:
In 2009, Apprenticeships will be established in partnership with public health agencies in the following states: Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Texas. Specific assignment locations within these states have not yet been determined.
Job Functions:
Apprentices will perform some or all of the following job functions:
• Interaction with public health clients (e.g., interviewing, counseling, and education)
• Investigation of public health problems and issues (e.g., assisting in disease outbreak investigations and assisting in implementing actions)
• Data collection, analysis and reporting (e.g., as relates to case reports and field investigations)
• Surveillance activities (e.g., recording and processing case reports from health care providers, labs, hospitals; analyzing information for trends)
• Public health education (e.g., developing public health education information for individuals or communities; helping to plan and deliver presentations and publicity campaigns)
• Provision of public health services (e.g., facilitating clinical services, making home visits)
• Community involvement and partnership (e.g., working with community agencies to design and conduct programs; participating in community health assessments)
• Liaison with other entities in the public health system (e.g., working with private health care providers, hospitals, laboratories, medical staff, and community-based organizations)
Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary range is approximately $30,000 – $45,000, and will vary based on location. Apprentices will also be eligible for a full range of benefits.

General Summary:
Provides desktop publishing, graphic design, and production for new business proposals in a fast-paced environment with strict client deadlines.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
•Assume responsibility for production of proposals, including working with Proposal Coordinators to prepare hard copy and e-copy documents required for submission
•Create templates (cover, narrative template, CV template, etc.) based on AECOM and client-specific branding guidelines
•Design proposal charts and graphics with guidance from Proposal Coordinator and Technical writers
•Implement and/or supervise copy editing/proofreading of proposal.
•Format and print Cost Proposal spreadsheets and inputs
•Prepare submission materials (binders, shipping materials, labels, etc)
•Develop familiarity with the full life-cycle of proposal development (from the “go”-decision through production and delivery) by assisting Proposal Coordinators on selected proposal efforts.
•Ensure compliance with Request for Proposal (RFP) requirements
•Assist Manager of Proposal Coordination with additional tasks/initiatives as assigned.
Qualifications:
•Bachelors degree required.
•Interest in and desire to work in International Development industry
•Advanced Proficiency with MS Office Suite, MS Visio, Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard, Adobe CS3 Photoshop, InDesign
•Proven experience in Graphic Design and/or Desktop Publishing (such as editing, lay-out and publishing for newspaper, marketing materials, etc.)
•Flexible schedule, availability to work late evenings and weekends
•Proven organizational and time management skills; Superior attention to detail
•Ability to write and verbally communicate clearly and concisely
•Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and in a team
