EU-US Atlantis Program

Call for Applications:

Transatlantic Master’s Degree in Int’l Security & Development Policy

Apply now for the next cohort starting in the Academic Year 2014.

Deadline for applications: 1 February 2014

In 2010, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University (USA), the Hertie School of Governance (Germany) and the International Institute of Social Studies (The Netherlands) launched the Transatlantic Dual/Double Master’s Degree in “International Security and Development Policy”.

This ATLANTIS Transatlantic Degree Program is intended to prepare students to work effectively with security and development practitioners from Europe and the United States and to train future practitioners who have an understanding of both the European and American security and development paradigms. This is a two-year program at the end of which students will receive two master’s degrees—one from the Maxwell School and one from either of the two European partners.

The program is supported by the ‘Bilateral Cooperation with Industrialized Countries Program’ set up jointly by the European Union and the United States Department of Education as part of the ATLANTIS Transatlantic Degree Program, which aims to enhance student mobility, innovation, curriculum development and academic recognition between the EU and the US. Stipends to cover the cost of living and travel while on the other continent are available for EU and US students.

Program:

Students spend the first year of their studies in the US at the Maxwell School, pursuing either a Master’s of International Relations (MAIR) or a Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) degree. Students then relocate to Europe, where they spend the third semester at the Hertie School of Governance (Master of Public Policy (MPP) program) and their fourth semester at the Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University (ISS) (Master of Development Studies (MDS) program). During the second year in Europe students develop and complete their master’s thesis on a topic related to either security or development.

The program offers four degree tracks:

  • the MPA and MDS track,
  •  the MPA and MPP track,
  •  the MAIR and MDS track,
  •  or the MAIR and MPP track.

The language of instruction at all three institutions is English. German language courses are available at Syracuse University and in Berlin.
