The BCJIA is a student-run academic journal of international affairs published at the Bologna, Italy campus of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The BCJIA is a forum for the views of established scholars of international affairs as well as students of the discipline. The Journal is a fully peer-reviewed publication, published annually, with ISSN 1592-3444.

This year, the Journal will explore the theme of “Stalemates”. The editors seek new perspectives on the seemingly intractable global issues for which innovative solutions are in short supply. Stalemates can occur within states, between states, and in supranational disputes over the global commons. The Journal will not only explore the nature of these conflicts, but also address the possibility for breakthrough.

There is no shortage of contemporary stalemates: the unfolding civil war and humanitarian disaster in Syria; the imperative to address global climate change; the ongoing problems of incomplete European integration; the potential for rapprochement between the US and Iran. How did these stalemates come to be, and how can they be resolved?

These cases should be seen only as examples; authors of papers on other conflicts or breakthroughs are encouraged to submit their work. Scholars of disciplines like history, sociology, international law, and conflict resolution are also encouraged to submit papers related to international relations. Papers should be:

  • Academic articles of up to 6,000 words, or shorter commentaries of up to 2,000 words
  • Formatted in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style with endnotes following the article
  • Accompanied by an abstract of 100-150 words and a cover letter that includes the author’s name, contact information and a short bio, written in the third person
  • Submitted via email to editor@bcjournal.org no later than February 21, 2014

In addition to formal academic papers, shorter papers, commentaries, essays and book reviews are also welcomed. Successful authors will be notified of acceptance in early March. Past issues of the Journal can be seen here: http://bcjournal.org/ Questions about the Journal or this call for submissions should be directed to the editors at editor@bcjournal.org
