Public Policy Associate
Southern Center for Human Rights

The Public Policy Associate will work closely with the Public Policy Director to develop and advocate policies to further the mission of SCHR, including but not limited to alternatives to incarceration, abolition of the death penalty, a strong public defender system and other smart on crime measures. This position requires the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. You must be able to respond quickly and nimbly to situations that are in constant flux. The Public Policy Associate must have strong initiative and problem solving skills; the ability to deal effectively with pressure and deadlines; an eye for detail; the ability to organize and prioritize work quickly; and a friendly, approachable demeanor.

Job responsibilities:
• Develop and implement media plans and messages for litigation, campaigns and events;
• Write press releases, opinion editorials, reports, background and fact sheets;
• Contribute to building positive relationships with members of the media to ensure that strategic messages appear in targeted placements. Compile and maintain records of media contacts and appearances;
• Contribute to SCHR’s statewide legislative advocacy, particularly in terms of cultivating the support of state legislators, partner organizations, and constituents;
• Represent SCHR and its work in community meetings and classrooms;
• Work with partner organizations to support efforts related to SCHR’s mission.

The desired candidate:
• Is a smart self-starter with a track record of initiative and success;
• Has excellent writing and oral communication skills;
• Is comfortable working independently and being self-directed, while staying regularly connected with the Policy Director;
• Is PC literate, including electronic communications, Microsoft applications, desktop publishing. Familiarity with design tools a plus;
• Has a demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and communities;
• Understands and enjoys multifaceted strategic public policy advocacy that involves legislative advocacy, media relations, litigation, policy analysis and coalition-building activities;
• Has experience developing strategic public relations and communications plans and implementing effective media relations strategies. An awareness of ‘best practices’ for nonprofit communications is welcomed;
• Is a strategic thinker with excellent research, prioritization, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; is able to think ‘big picture’ as well as translate ideas into realistic, actionable plans;
• Holds a Bachelor’s Degree (preferred degree: Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, Women’s Studies, or related field) and at least 2 years experience working in a related field.

Project Associate – Intelligence Policy
RAND Corporation

RAND’s Intelligence Policy Center is seeking a highly motivated Project Associate to work on a variety of intelligence-related national security research projects as a member of multi-disciplinary research teams addressing complex intelligence policy problems. Project Associates are expected to perform research support tasks under supervision of RAND researchers. They may provide both quantitative and qualitative support to research projects and carry out analytic tasks in their areas of expertise.

Tasks may include:

*Data assembly and analysis
*Monitoring and translation of foreign web sites and journals
*Simulation modeling and computer programming
*Literature reviews
*Phone and/or in-person interviews
*Management of tabletop exercises or focus groups
*Preparation of documents and presentations

Project Associates may have responsibilities for managing research project operations, including:
– Preparing and monitoring budgets
– Coordinating teams of researchers
– Managing project support staff
– Organizing conferences
– Coordinating IRB approvals
– Overseeing the production of final reports.

QUALIFICATIONS
Educational requirements: MA/MS degree required, and at least 3 years of relevant work experience. Applicants with a BA/BS in technical field such as engineering or other field with strong empirical and/or modeling skills or strong language skills may also apply.

Preference given to applicants with degrees in engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, and operations research, international affairs, public policy and economics, particularly from highly selective colleges and research-oriented universities.

Language skills: Applicants with high level skills in the following languages are preferred: Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, Javanese, Malay

Minimum experience required: 3 years

Type of experience required: Research and analysis support experience in the Intelligence Community or in a research- oriented organization. Experience in intelligence related fields, such as terrorism, counterinsurgency, CRBN weapons proliferation, area studies, transnational issues, or economic development and nation-building preferred.

Security Clearance: Applicants with a security clearance (TS/SCI with IC polygraph) strongly preferred.
