Spring Break Volunteer Service Trips, Alternative Service Breaks

Alternative Service Breaks has opened applications for its  Spring Break Service Trips to New Orleans and the Dominican Republic. They’re looking for participants and student trip leaders.

What is ASB?

ASB is a travel-based service org at Tech. During our school breaks (such as Fall Break, Spring Break, etc), They send a group of students off to help communities outside of the ATL area, and to enjoy the trip while they’re at it! They do all the logistical planning so you don’t have to, and send participants by student trip leaders and faculty advisors. people leave our trips genuinely feeling confident that their help would still benefit these people after they’ve left. Being a Trip Leader is an especially great leadership opportunity. I also see people still spending time together with the friends they made on these trips well after they’re over, so it’s a great way to meet people! Housing, food, transportation, flights, and volunteer activity costs will all be covered by the participation fees.

We will be going to the Dominican Republic where participants will work with our community partner, 7 Elements, to build bottle houses! These houses have a cement foundation and a wooden frame, but the insulation is provided by recycled plastic bottles as a way to both reuse waste and protect homeowners during times of extreme temperatures. Besides building, volunteers will also get opportunities to explore different destinations near the worksites such as caves, beaches, and popular tourist areas. You’ll also get opportunities to hear lectures about the culture and socioeconomic nuances faced by the local community. Applications Close on Friday, Jan 20th.

If international travel isn’t your thing, we’ll also be going to New Orleans, LA where participants will work with Merry Green Marvel. New Orleans is on the front lines of climate change and many of the projects will attempt to address the environmental issues impacting the area. Additionally, participants will have many opportunities to experience New Orleans culture and experience fun activities such as kayaking, swamp tours, and a New Orleans cooking class. Applications Close on Friday, Jan 27th.
