The program is unprecedented in China; it aims to train a new generation of foreign China experts through a two-year degree program taught and administered entirely in English. Consequently, students need not enter the program with any prior Chinese language proficiency.
Though the program resides within Renmin’s School of International Studies, it is quite interdisciplinary; drawing on the expertise of excellent professors from several of the university’s other Schools, including Political Science, Economics, Business, and Culture Studies. In addition to regular courses, every term a dozen preeminent outside scholars, experts, and retired government officials are invited to participate in a special lecture series for first year students. To provide more hands-on experience and to help students cultivate professional networks in Beijing, visits can be arranged to a dozen think tanks, businesses, and governmental or non-governmental institutes in and around the city.
In September 2010, at least 5 partial scholarships will be provided for incoming students, covering half of the tuition, or 30,000 CNY (4,400 USD) per academic year. Part-time jobs for those who need additional financial support can also be arranged. For example, an English language tutor can make up to 20 USD/hour in Beijing.
For students wishing to enter the program this fall, the application deadline is May 20, 2010.
